How do we make sure we achieve a balanced life in retirement? There are 4 areas we must address to have a rewarding and purposeful retirement.
Lifestyle
In retirement, we finally have the freedom to choose how to spend our time. No more early alarms. No more meetings. No more deadlines. But that also means we now have the extra hours to fill in. Retirees that are having a great time in retirement are those that have hobbies and outlets. They do things that they want to do. They travel, volunteer, spend time with grandkids, pick up a new instrument, or do any things that are fulfilling to them.
Spending Habits
From the financial standpoint in retirement, we can’t ignore spending habits. We must budget so we can spend in a way that maintains our retirement lifestyle. We want to make sure we don’t spend so much in the first two or three years and then realize that we won’t be able to live that lifestyle for the next 10, 20 years, and so.
Self-Care
Retirement is a time we can finally relax and enjoy. But keep in mind that as we age, it’s important to take care of ourselves both physically and mentally. So, we must remember to spend time taking care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Some examples are making time for cardio, scheduling doctor appointments, reading, meditating, taking up a hobby, etc.
Relationships
When we are working, it’s hard to make relationships a priority. Now in retirement, we can use those extra hours to see family and friends. Even though we may have neglected these relationships, it’s never too late to connect and build the close relationships we want.
Final Thoughts
How do you spend your life in retirement? Are you feeling aimless, bored, and isolated? If you are, I hope this blog post will help you to achieve a fulfilling and balanced life in retirement.
Sound advice.
On Relationships, I would like to add on my thoughts here:
My wife and I are both retired. She retires more recently. As we now practically see each other all the time in our waking hours. It is easy to be impatient to small stuff that could cumulate and deteriorate our relationship. So we have to make extra effort to maintain it. We have to be more tolerant to each other and ready to accept each others fault or shortcomings.
On finance, we have to learn to treat ourselves first instead of thinking of our kids or grandkids all the time.
Thank you.

Even though Retirement is really a freedom to do what, when, where, and how we want, continue doing thing to stay healthy and happy are important.
Love your cute drawing always brings a smile to my face… bottle at his hand and his beer belly. ?
Thank you.
Retirement isn’t so much an ending as it is a new beginning, as I have been spending a lot more time with family and physically a lot more active, and my stress levels reduced. Equally, I feel just as much a great sense of purpose and a fulfilling life as my career life.
Love your cute drawing too – a left-hander with a beer belly holding a bottle of beer in his left hand.
Thank you!
